#FacesOfAbilityFriday – Gary G.
This week on #FacesOfAbilityFriday we are featuring Gary G. Gary lives in one of MORA’s residential homes. We sat down with Gary and his staff to talk about his life and what makes him so awesome.
Gary works at Choice. He does a few different sorting activities there, including sorting screws and tactile sorting. Gary also participates in recreational activities at Choice and spends time out in the community. He’s been with Choice for many years and has made a lot of friends there along the way. Gary doesn’t do any volunteering currently.
Gary grew up in Minnesota. He has a sister, who he’s close to and spends time with on a regular basis. His mom is still alive, and he sees her often as well. Gary moved into a MORA house in the 1970s and has lived in different homes with MORA ever since. He’s made a lot of friends throughout his time at MORA and is always excited when he gets to spend time with those people.
Gary is a unique guy in a lot of ways. He loves shoes and is very obsessed with the ones that he owns. Gary names all his pairs of shoes. A few of the names for his current shoes are his Snowboards, Saint Bernards, and Paddles. Gary will change his shoes up to 10 times each day because he likes to try and wear each pair that he has. He’s very protective of his shoes and doesn’t like it when staff or others touch them. Gary also has a great sense of humor. He loves to laugh with people, and sometimes will have a random fit of laughter that can last up to 20 or 30 minutes! Staff often start laughing with him when this happens, and it turns into one of the funniest things in the house.
We asked Gary’s staff to tell us some awesome things about him. The first thing his staff mentioned is his personality. His staff describe Gary as “always smiling and wanting to chat your ear off.” He loves to be around people and is always quick to join in the conversation. Gary can brighten anyone’s day with his smile or his laughter.
Gary is involved in his community in a few ways. He’s a member of the MORA Glee Club and has had the opportunity to perform at many places around town and in front of a variety of people from the community. He goes to church every Tuesday night and has made connections through this experience (and it’s one of his favorite things to do). He’s also active in the community when he’s with his sister.
