#FacesOfAbilityFriday – Megan M.

This week on #FacesOfAbilityFriday we’re featuring Megan M. Megan lives in one of MORA’s residential homes. We sat down with Megan after work and chatted with her about her life, what she likes, and what makes her special.

Megan works at McDonalds in Excelsior. She’s been there since 2012 and loves her job there. She cleans tables and seats, sweeps and mops the floor, and cleans trays in the back of the house. Megan said that she used to worry about how many hours she worked, because it impacted her benefits, but now that she’s in a MORA house she doesn’t have to worry about this anymore and is working 20 hours a week now!

Megan grew up in Minneapolis with her parents and two sisters. She lived in a house with another agency prior to coming to MORA but wasn’t satisfied with the services she was getting. Megan tells us that she “loves” living at her MORA house because it meets her needs and provides her with the activities she likes.

Megan’s dream is to make enough money to go on a big vacation. She told us that she’d love to travel to Florida. She wants to go there, and then head off on a cruise. She was sure to tell us that she doesn’t think she’d like to travel to Las Vegas.

When it comes to what she does best, Megan was quick to tell us that she’s great with computers. She talked about a time when she helped her grandma figure out how to look at pictures that were on her flash drive. She also said she’s helped people hook up printers and install drivers when they couldn’t figure out how to do this on their own.

Megan had several special stories to tell us about her. She and her family attended a fundraiser event once, where they bid on Champions Club tickets for a MN Twins game. They won, and Megan got to sit in the 5th row behind home plate. (They also got free food with their seats, which Megan thought was awesome!) A few years back, Megan was crowned Employee of the Month at McDonalds. She got some fun gifts for this, as well as some free meals. She described this experience as “an honor,” and was very excited to share it with us.

Megan has a super awesome talent that she uses and that she let Christina and I experience first hand after our interview. Megan creates stories using Garage Band software on her iMac. She can change her voice with the software and has multiple characters in her stories. Her stories are suspenseful and include music and sound effects. Megan let Christina and I listen to a portion of a story she’s currently working on, and it was a completely awesome experience. (We even encouraged her to think about starting a podcast!)

If Megan could tell the community anything about herself, she’d want people to know that she’s “very energetic” and she loves to participate in MORA activities. She also wants people to know that she tries to help others as much as she can.

Megan’s involved in her community in several ways. She works in the community at McDonalds, and through this has grown to know community members. She’s involved in Glee Club and Showstoppers dance and has had the opportunity to perform in front of the community with these groups. She’s also involved in two churches and has made community connections there too!
