#FacesOfAbilityFriday – Shannon S.
This week on #FacesOfAbilityFriday we are featuring Shannon S. Shannon lives in one of MORA’s residential homes. We sat down with Shannon and two of her staff to find out more about her and all the awesome things she’s up to!
Shannon attends MORA’s Adult Day Services program. She doesn’t have a paying job, but Shannon participates in a lot of therapeutic and recreational activities at ADS. She gets to do art projects and go on outings in the community. Shannon has made many valuable and important relationships at ADS and seems to love going there and spending time with everyone.
Shannon comes from a big family. She has four siblings, all of whom are brothers. Family relationships are important to Shannon, and she loves Christmastime because she gets to spend the most amount of time with her brother during the holidays.
Shannon’s staff had a few special things they wanted to tell us about her. Shannon is non-verbal and can’t communicate in the traditional fashion. Her staff told us that Shannon has a special way of communicating with people, and that’s by using her eyes. Different eye movements and expressions mean different things, and staff who work with Shannon get to know what these things communicate. She also uses some vocalizations for communication, and each sound has a different meaning, which staff quickly pick up on.
Shannon loves crime shows. She’s all about anything that has lots of action and adventure. She enjoys watching shows with gentlemen that she finds attractive, and she likes to “smile at the cute boys” on the TV when she’s watching.
If Shannon’s staff could tell the community anything about her, they would want people to know that Shannon is “the sweetest girl ever.” Her staff said that she has a kind heart and loves holding hands with people. Shannon always puts a smile on the faces of people she comes in contact with, and leaves a lasting, positive impression wherever she goes.
Quick facts about Shannon:
Shannon loves mashed potatoes.
Her favorite holiday is Christmas.
She likes to listen to music by Pastor Don.
Shannon’s favorite TV shows are crime shows and action shows. She loves the “Fast and the Furious” movie franchise and “Game of Thrones.”
