#FacesOfAbilityFriday – Stefan K.

This week on #FacesOfAbilityFriday we’re showcasing Stefan Kavan. Stefan lives in one of MORA’s residential homes, where he enjoys spending ample amounts of time on his computer and drawing all kinds of pictures. He spent his early years in Romania, moving to Minnesota in 1991 with his adopted family. Growing up in LeCenter, Stefan wowed his classmates with his extensive knowledge of trains and maps. He has lived at his current house since 2011, and in this time, has grown close to his three housemates. Stefan stays active in his community, attending regular church services and participating in a variety of different activities.

Stefan receives job coaching through Kaposia and works two jobs: dishwashing at Presbyterian Homes and housekeeping at Wedding Day Diamonds. He used to participate in multiple volunteer activities as well, but now that he has two jobs to keep him busy, he no longer does this.

Stefan’s co-worker at Wedding Day Diamonds was quick to express her appreciation for the work he does and his presence at the store. She said that each day when Stefan arrives, the first thing he does is gives the staff an update on the traffic and the weather. She credits him with being the reason everyone at the store stays up-to-date on current events, and described Stefan has a “hard worker” who does “an excellent job.”

Stefan is an accomplished public speaker, who has traveled throughout Minnesota and the surrounding states with his mom, Barb, educating people on life with Autism. The duo co-authored a book called Trainman: Gaining Acceptance … and Friends … Through Special Interests, which was published by the Autism Asperger Publishing Company. The book received an honorable mention at the 2010 New England Book Festival. (Purchase your copy of Trainman here: http://amzn.to/2utcqFF.)

In addition to his regular activities, Stefan loves to travel. He takes many trips each year with family, and last fall, had the opportunity to go to Wisconsin Dells for a few days with one of the staff at his house. Stefan loves trains and has used Amtrak to get to several of his destinations. He would like to visit Chicago and the Western USA, as well as Europe and Canada someday.
